With all due respect and I'm really not trying to start an internet fight but I cringe a little whenever I hear someone use this as a cue or teaching point. Yes using physics backspin will create lift which causes the ball to go further but realistically how do you do this and how do you teach it? Not saying this is you but most people will resort to "swing down on the ball to get backspin" and that's some of the worst advice anyone could ever get.
First think of the plane the pitch is coming towards the plate - it's a downward plane due to the pitcher being higher than the hitter. So any type of downward swing is going to severely limit the amount of time the bat will be on or in the same place as the pitch. The key to hitting is getting the barrel of the bat on the same plane as the ball for as long as you can through the swing. By doing this you are going to have a better chance of hitting the ball square which is where your power is. You don't create "power" through backspin but you do by hitting the ball with all the force you can put into the swing without having mechanics break down. The barrel rarely EVER hits the ball square (and when it does this is when it will come screaming at the fielder like a knuckle ball). If the barrel is off ever so slightly toward the bottom of the midline of the ball then you have the backspin which helps carry / lift the ball further. But realistically this backspin isn't going to truly gain much more distance than just flat out ole power so to try and create backspin for that extra little bit isn't worth it. Work on collapsing the backside to get the barrel into the pitch plane longer to hit the ball harder.
Backspin should be a result of a good swing not a goal of it.
Also, that video isn't very credible to me. It doesn't try to explain why backspin is helpful - all it does is say several different ways that backspin carries the ball further. Plus they show the same swing from each side over and over. So basically they are only showing one swing several times from each side.
Like I said I'm not trying to be a jerk or an internet tough guy but what you put can misguide some people if not careful.

2709 is a bully. You all will see shortly that I'm a huge instigator of sarcasm and satire. I also will jokingly pit people against other. 2079...I already appreciate your thoughtfulness of your posts. And when I put my rules of the board together there will be an understanding that we can peaceful argue. But "cornhole"s aren't allowed. It's all good. Keep em coming.

LOL had me worried a little. I usually hate talking hitting on message boards because without being able to really show what I'm saying its hard to get the message across. Plus almost every hitting forum turns into a urinating contest with all the "experts". I hope this one doesn't go down that road because there is a lot to be learned. There are many ways to teach hitting and what I do won't work for everyone and that's the same for all. I love trading ideas back and forth and discussing them but I hate arguing over them because nobody wins. That's why I was really trying to stress my opinion isn't an attack but a thought to be discussed.
So far I'm liking this place.

Coach. I have a football board. I DO NOT MODERATE IT AT ALL!!! Why? I delete the "cornhole"s. In my day...I do NOT have time to sit around and "put out fires" or delete posts...threads...etc.
The "my way is better than your way" "poop" isn't going to last here. You can piss and moan at each other. I hope it comes to a "agree to disagree" moment. People calling each other out or believing in their way is the only way can move along.
Spirited discussion? Bring it!!! I need to sponge!

You may lose me on that one RSR-man because name calling gets misinterpreted imo, but such is life. Young athletes who mirror certain adult tendencies muck up certain sportsmanship items as they grow through their amatuer sports journeys.

The thing is bkwrd is that I'm talking on this board. I'm not talking to the kids. A lot of my good friends who are Sacramento area head football coaches talk a lot of trash to each other....in jest. That is all I meant by that.
I teach at Nevada Union and coach. Believe me...I nail it down. No cussing...name calling...nothing. We're all about getting it done right on my watch. This board and my other board are places for good talks and some good times.

I thought this was the hitting section?? I agree w/ 2709. I can not imagine teaching a kid to hit with backspin. I would be interested to see how these guys teach it, as they don't explain on the video. The only time I have ever heard someone teach a backspin hitting approach was for slow pitch softball.
