As we begin to work with the young men coming out of off-season hibernation it is important to work to break bad habits and create better mental pathways for the muscles to follow.
Now is the time to break down the big movements of swings, throwing, and fielding into their smaller parts and fine tune those movements. Work hard on the tee and with soft toss as well as dry swings to clean up sloppy hand paths, footwork, and balance points. Teach the feel of elbow position, foot placement, and weight shift when throwing the baseball.
Get rid of the glove and have a player work slow grounders into his bare hands with emphasis on body position, head placement, and hand work when receiving the ball. Now is the time to re-train the mind and body, now when the young mind and body is enthusiastic and ripe for re-education.
We need to encourage all our players (and coaches) to be willing to be taught anew. The really great players and coaches are the ones who will always be open and receptive to new information, new techniques, and new ways to learn what they think they already know.
Greatness comes from never thinking you are great.
